FUNERAL OF ALEXEI NAVALNY
Alexei Navalny, Russia’s leading opposition politician, died on February 16, 2024, in the Penal Colony “Polar Wolf” in Kharp, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region. On March 1, 2024, after lengthy negotiations regarding the release of his body to his family, the politician’s funeral took place in Moscow. On this day, outside the “Console My Sorrows” temple in the Marino district of Moscow, where the politician’s requiem was held, a long queue of people gathered to bid farewell to Alexei Navalny and accompany him on his final journey. Despite warnings from authorities and the risk of possible arrests, tens of thousands of people came to say goodbye to the politician. On the way to the cemetery, people chanted slogans: “He was not afraid, and we are not afraid!” and “Love is stronger than fear.” Alexei Navalny was buried in the Borisovskoye Cemetery, and spontaneous memorials formed in the area of the funeral proceedings.
